Mercitalia Rail and Marcegaglia Group: agreement for the transport of steel by rail

Four-year agreement signed (2019 - 2022)

Rome, 2 August 2019

A new service for the rail transport of steel in Italy and abroad is launched.

These are the provisions of the agreement signed between Mercitalia Rail (Mercitalia Hub - FS Italiane Group), the largest Italian rail freight company and one of the largest in Europe, and the Marcegaglia Group, world leader in steel processing.

The agreement will last for four years (2019-2022). The service involves about 30 trains per week (using the new "high-performance" Mercitalia Rail electric locomotives and the new "intelligent" coils-carrying wagons) within Italy, mainly on the Ravenna - Gazoldo degli Ippoliti/Casalmaggiore line, and international lines between Italy and Germany/Poland/Serbia.

Overall, Mercitalia Rail's commitment will result in approximately 1.3 million tonnes of steel transported by rail each year, with obvious benefits in terms of environmental sustainability.

In 2018 Mercitalia Rail's services to and from Marcegaglia effectively shifted about 75,000 trucks from road to rail, saving about 27,000 tons of CO2 emissions into the environment.

As well as strengthening the long-running partnership between Mercitalia Rail and the Marcegaglia Group, the agreement also lays the foundations for the development of new logistics projects (new freight traffic and services) that the two companies have agreed to launch in the near future.
